The Baldrige Criteria Are Coming! The Baldrige Criteria Are Coming! (Actually, they’re here!)
Some of you may not know that the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program (BPEP) actually practices what they preach – evaluation and improvement, and innovation. Since its inception, the Baldrige Excellence Framework (aka “The Criteria” to those more seasoned – ahem – Baldrige fanatics) has undergone regular cycles of review and revision. As part of the review process, BPEP invites focus groups to identify areas for clarification, increased emphasis, new topics, and emerging trends. But they are quick to look for “proven leadership and management practices for high performance” rather than the latest trends or fads touted by this or that “guru.” It’s this disciplined validation that helps to differentiate the Baldrige Criteria from other business books that promise quick fixes that aren’t sustainable.
While many of the changes are relatively minor, there are some topics that have received increased attention and enhanced clarification. These are:
– Digitization and the fourth industrial revolution
– Equity and inclusion
– Societal contributions
In addition, further explanation of the learning evaluation factor in the Process Scoring Guidelines includes the reminder that the Baldrige scoring, in general, is a “best fit” approach that is holistic in nature. “The organization’s achievement level in one component is not a ‘gate’ blocking a score in a particular range.”
